i walk to the end of the pier. something about the empty benches calls to me. i sit and stare at the gray sea in front of me. it stretches on for forever. even its edges meld with the gray sky until you can't tell where one ends and the other begins.
the vastness of sea-sky make me feel small and insignificant. if i'm not careful, i can imagine i'm alone. that there's no one else like me in the whole world. that no one understands. i close my eyes and wonder if anyone else will come so i won't be alone.
as i sit, i hear soft footsteps, as if those approaching don't want to disturb me. i open my eyes and turn my head. i could use some company, so i give a hesitant smile of invitation. in ones and twos, people sit on the other benches. two people i recognize sit on my bench. after a while, the pier is full. even in our silence, i know they feel the way i do.
for today, at least, i realize i'm not alone.

Lovely story.
Michelle, this is beautiful. Thank you. I needed the reminder.
I am not alone. I am sitting on a bench looking at the sea. Beside my comrades.
Thank you, that rebel, Olivia
Wandaadnaw- thank you.
Olivia - thank you and you're welcome.
this is giving me an idea - maybe put up photo writing prompts of my own?
Love this! Thank you for sharing it.
Oh I love this! I can imagine sitting on this bench too, taking in the ocean, the breeze and having people sit next to me but no having to say a word. ;))
I too would join you on the bench and enjoy the vastness of the sea-sky, yet relish the comrades fellowship of like-minded appreciation of it all.
That's a lovely photo. I've been to places like it, but they're usually swarming with seagulls and don't look nearly as 'clean' because of it. Haha! :)
beautiful imagery
