if you give a girl No Plot, No Problem

she's going to want a cookie and a glass of milk to go with it...

sorry. i got sidetracked. let me try again. ahem...

if you give a girl No Plot, No Problem, she's going to sign up for NaNoWriMo. if she signs up for Nano, she's going to end up writing 53,000 words in 17 days. if she writes 53,000 words in 17 days, she's going to discover she's not even halfway finished and it wasn't the story she wanted to write anyway.

when the horrible truth hits her, she'll give up in despair and call her best friend. her best friend will talk her down from her ledge and tell her, "It's a good story. You should keep going."

after getting herself under control, the new writer will begin again and take 2 months to write her first draft. and then will take several more months to write the subsequent drafts, and then finally, when all the ducks are in a row, she'll decide that she wants one copy to prove that she actually wrote a novel.

once she publishes said book, and more people than she could have ever imagined end up buying it, other stories will pop into her head. and she'll write them. and more will come. and a sequel to the first novel will demand to be written. (of course, she will give in to its demands.)

and finally, after many years of denying the truth, she will admit that she is, in fact, a writer.

yes, all that from reading one little book.

to all my friends signing up for NaNoWriMo... best wishes and may the words pour out of you at a phenomenal rate.

i should add that i'm not partipating this year, and probably won't in the future. when i write novels, i need a plot and a timeline and a calendar to keep track of everything because they're so danged complicated. and as far as deadlines go, anytime i set one for myself, writing-wise, my brain totally freaks out and shuts down in the creativity department.

so, while i love Nano for how it got me started writing, and how it gets others writing, it's not the best way for me to write. besides, November in AZ is gorgeous. why would i want to sit around all day writing when i can finally be outside with 80 degree weather?

Are you doing NaNoWriMo? I keep thinking I'd like to, but timing hasn't been write (lol I so unintentionally made that typo - I mean "right"). This year, I'll be marketing TWO books. And why do they make it in November, as in right before the holidays and craziness? Especially w/ Thanksgiving & Black Friday right at the end of the month when you're probably madly writing to get all those words in? Oh, well, I, too, wish everyone luck who's doing it.

I was interested in NaNoWriMo years ago until I came to a difficult conclusion: I cannot write for deadlines. I like writing at my own pace.

I might try NaNo this year - haven't decided.
